FAQs about FOJ
1What is Friends of Jefferson?
Friends of Jefferson, also known as FOJ, is the school foundation for Jefferson Elementary. A foundation is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation that works to raise funds and support certain causes. In the case of FOJ, we exist to raise funds to pay for educational and enrichment activities for Jefferson Elementary. Besides raising money, we also focus on community outreach, public relations, and generally volunteering to help out in any way we can for the school.
2How is FOJ different from the PTA?
Since we are not bound by all of the regulations and procedures of PTA, which is a huge national organization, we can be more creative in how we raise money, and more flexible in how we spend it. We also focus more on working with businesses and organizations in the community, and having off-campus fundraising events (such as the monthly Family Movie Night at Waypoint Public), whereas the PTA runs most of the on campus events.
3What has FOJ done for the school?
We have funded after-school clubs, organized the Jefferson Holiday Program at Observatory North Park, built planter boxes in the Literacy Garden, and funded the Gardening Program, to name just a few projects. We have also done quite a bit of public relations work to raise Jefferson’s profile, appearing on local TV, doing newspaper interviews, and writing articles for local newspapers and websites. New for the 2017-2018 school year, we are funding art education for all students through the ArtReach San Diego organization.
4What are FOJs goals for this year and beyond?
We want to sponsor more after-school clubs and to support the STEAM program. We would also like to encourage even more parent involvement, and work to address any issues that concern Jefferson families.
5How much money does FOJ raise and spend each year?
The scope of our work has grown every year since we started in 2014. In the 2016-2017 school year, we raised about $30,000 and spent about $20,000, mostly on the gardening program. In the 2017-2018 school year, we hope to raise about $40,000. We are committed to paying for gardening classes ($20k) and art classes ($12k) this year, and we will spend whatever is left (leaving some money as a cushion, of course) on after-school clubs and whatever needs arise during the year.
